อำเภอเกาะสมุยมีพื้นที่ของเกาะต่าง ๆ รวมกันรวมประมาณ 252 ตารางกิโลเมตร เฉพาะตัวเกาะสมุยเองมีพื้นที่ประมาณ 228 ตารางกิโลเมตร เป็นเกาะที่ใหญ่ที่สุดเป็นอันดับสามของประเทศไทย รองจากเกาะภูเก็ตและเกาะช้าง
เดิมเกาะสมุยมีชื่อเสียงในฐานะเป็นแหล่งปลูกมะพร้าว ปัจจุบันเป็นสถานที่พักผ่อนตากอากาศที่ชาวต่างประเทศนิยมเดินทางมาท่องเที่ยว มีร้านค้า โรงแรม และสถานบันเทิงต่าง ๆ มากมาย หาดที่เป็นที่นิยมของเกาะสมุย คือ หาดเฉวง บริเวณชายหาดยาวประมาณ 7 กิโลเมตร ถ้าได้ลงมือเดินตั้งแต่ต้นหาดจนกระทั่งถึงปลายหาดจะใช้เวลาประมาณถึง 2 ชั่วโมง เพราะการเดินบนผืนทรายไม่เหมือนการเดินบนพื้นดินปรกติ หาดที่มีความสวยงามเป็นอันดับรองลงมา คือ หาดละไม หาดเชิงมนต์ แหลมโจรคร่ำ หาดท้องยาง หาดหน้าทอน หาดพังกา และหาดตลิ่งงาม และนักท่องเที่ยวยังสามารถเดินทางต่อไปยังเกาะพงัน และเกาะเต่าได้อีกด้วย
